CanopyCam

What is CanopyCam?

CanopyCam is a system that allows standard wildlife trail cameras, also known as camera traps, to be easily utilised at height for conservation, research, monitoring or general interest purposes.

Reaching the forest canopy is a major challenge for research. Cameras must be placed high in trees, needing specialist equipment and skills. Accessing the data from the traps then involves either climbing back up or using very expensive and complex wireless transmission systems. Climbing into the canopy is risky and time-consuming work, making it tough to perform regular maintenance.

CanopyCam allows the cameras to be lowered to the ground for data collection, battery changes, or general maintenance before being hauled up again into position – all from the ground and in a fraction of the time.

Canopy camera trapping is a valuable field of research but is limited by the costs (from equipment, time & salaries) of climbing trees to install cameras and then re-climbing to retrieve data. CanopyCam significantly reduces these costs and allows anyone, not just trained tree climbers, to retrieve the data once installed. This allows for long term canopy research and monitoring to be more accessible and far cheaper, leading to more insights in the hidden world above us.

Potential uses:

  • Nest monitoring
  • Long term arboreal monitoring
  • Species detection
  • Behavioural studies
  • Diversity assessments

The system(s) can be sold individually if you or your team are already competent climbers, or as part of an installation package where our experienced team can set up and install the system(s) on your target tree(s) or structure(s), leaving you to collect data and maintain the camera(s) from the ground.
